Chapter Fourteen
Lance wished he’d asked Jake to come over after dinner last night, but Trixie hadn’t pulled her claws out of Jake long enough for him to ask. It had been a little weird. Trixie had told him about working at the club before Mark died. She went on about how great Mark had been. Sadly, Lance agreed that he didn’t measure up when compared with Jake’s ex.
For some reason Lance had thought Jake hadn’t been that into his relationship with Mark. He’d been wrong. According to Trixie, Mark and Jake had had a perfect relationship, which Jake hadn’t denied. Their relationship sounded more like a fairytale than your normal gay romance.
Lance heard a knock on the door, pulled on his pants and plucked a semi-clean shirt out of the laundry basket. He didn’t check the peephole but wished he had. A reporter stood on his porch.
“Are you Lance Abbott?”
“Yes,” he said.
“Do you have any comment on the death of Chris Brinkley?”
“What?”
“Chris Brinkley, he died in your office two days ago. The parents are planning on suing you. Did you have anything to say in your defense before I run this story?”
Lance couldn’t move, much less talk. The reporter shifted back and forth on his feet. Are you on crack? was what he wanted to say.
“Uh, I’m sorry, but I don’t think I have anything to say,” Lance croaked.
“I’ll give you till five this evening then I’m turning in my story with or without your comments.”
“His parents are going to sue me?”
“Read about it in the paper tomorrow, buddy.”
Lance closed the door. His head pounded and his chest hurt. Fuck, what am I going to do?
Tears sprang to his eyes. How the hell could he endure a blow like this? He ripped off his shirt and shucked his pants. The shower was quick and cold. The frigid water woke him enough to bring out his fight. He hadn’t done anything wrong. Sure, the boy had died in his office, but no doctor had seen any signs of an aneurism. Hell, Chris’s own physician had missed the cues.
He jerked on fresh clothes, ready to fight this thing when he heard another knock at his front door. For a moment he thought about not answering, then changed his mind. He would face this problem head on. He wouldn’t hide. Sure, the parents had lost a child, but he wouldn’t roll over and ruin the rest of his life. If he were at fault he would pay, but not when he’d done everything right.
Lance rushed to the door and whipped it open, expecting to find another reporter.
Jake stood on his doorstep, his eyes wide.
Lance’s anger turned to confusion. Why was Jake here? Did he want Jake to know about the reporter and the probable lawsuit? What if the judge found out he was gay?
“Whoa, what’s up?”
Lance’s eyes filled. If he didn’t watch it he would be crying soon. Again. The entire week had been crap. How the hell was he supposed to run
